TXST’s new Bobcat Game Day live pregame show gives students hands-on sports media experience producing professional football coverage during the university’s inaugural Pac-12 season.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University has launched Bobcat Game Day, a new live football pregame show that gives students hands-on experience producing sports media for a public audience.

The first Bobcat Game Day show aired Sept. 12 on YouTube before TXST football’s home game against the University of Texas at San Antonio. The production at Boko’s Backyard marked the beginning of a season-long initiative that will bring faculty, students, staff and university partners together for live pregame coverage throughout TXST’s inaugural season in the Pac-12.

At each home game, faculty and students take on professional roles across the production, including hosting, reporting, sports analysis, scriptwriting, video editing, graphics, camera operation, feature production and live technical production. TXST Athletics Broadcast Coordinator Brant Freeman is lead anchor on the program.

The initiative brings together the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, TXST Athletics, TXST Global, the Office of the President and other university partners. Faculty, staff and media professionals work alongside students to provide mentorship that reflects professional sports media environments.

Bobcat Game Day will continue throughout the 2026 football season, with live productions planned before TXST home games. The long-term initiative will provide students with additional opportunities to report, produce, create digital content and build portfolio-ready work around TXST Athletics and the university’s growing presence in the Pac-12.

The project reflects the School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s emphasis on real-world learning by giving students opportunities to create media for real audiences, collaborate with professionals and gain experience before graduation.
