How long have you been at TXST?
Texas State has truly come full circle for me. My parents attended Southwest Texas, so it felt like home from the beginning. I earned my undergraduate degree in business management at SWT, later returned for my M.B.A. while working in industry, and stayed connected by guest lecturing and hosting interns. I eventually joined Texas State full-time, first teaching and leading internships in the Fashion Merchandising Department, and in 2020 transitioned to the McCoy College of Business. In total, I’ve had the privilege of serving Texas State for 20 years — teaching, mentoring, and helping students launch meaningful careers.
Why are internships important for students?
Internships are transformational for students. They bridge classroom learning with real-world application, helping students clarify their career path while developing professional skills. Most importantly, internships build confidence — students begin to see themselves as capable professionals who belong in the workplace.
How do you find or facilitate the right internships for students?
Successful internships start with relationships. Employers value Bobcats because they are hardworking, curious, adaptable, and ready to learn. By truly knowing our students — their strengths, goals, and interests — and understanding employer needs, we are able to create meaningful matches that set students up for success.
What’s one project or event you love being a part of?
One of my favorite recent experiences was hosting a Management Networking and Career Fair in the McCoy College of Business. This collaborative effort with the McCoy Student Success Center, Career Services, and the Management Department brought together 12 employers and more than 250 students. Employers praised our students’ professionalism and enthusiasm, and students left energized by real internship and career opportunities. This is what meaningful partnership looks like — universities, employers, and students working together to create life-changing outcomes.
What makes working with students meaningful for you?
Students are the heart of everything I do. They are curious, driven, and incredibly kind to one another. I love watching them meet for the first time in a classroom or in student organizations, grow through team projects, build lifelong friendships, and eventually return to campus with their families. Being part of that journey — helping students discover confidence, purpose, and a career path that can change not only their lives but their families’ futures — is deeply meaningful to me.
What accomplishment at TXST has meant the most to you?
The most meaningful accomplishment is seeing former students thrive in careers they once couldn’t imagine for themselves. When students tell me that an internship, a class, or a conversation helped them discover what a “career” could look like, I know the work matters. Receiving letters from alumni who credit Texas State — and our internship experiences — with shaping their professional lives is the greatest measure of success.
What inspires you when you come to work each day?
My inspiration comes from knowing that one conversation, one internship, or one moment of encouragement can change a student’s trajectory. If I can help even one student see their potential and believe they belong in a meaningful career, that makes everything worth it. Our students inspire me daily with their resilience, ambition, and willingness to dream bigger than they ever thought possible.
